A Familiar and Remarkable Setting

Set within the Howardian Hills near Coxwold, Newburgh Priory is one of North Yorkshire's most distinctive historic wedding venues. With its Georgian interiors, atmospheric ruins, beautiful gardens and lakeside views, it's a place I've always particularly enjoyed photographing.

Since my first wedding here in 2019, I've returned to Newburgh Priory for seven different celebrations. Each has been completely individual, but what I love most is how naturally the character of the estate becomes part of the story, without ever needing to take attention away from the people and moments that matter.

The Character of Newburgh Priory

One of the things I particularly love about Newburgh Priory is the variety it offers throughout a wedding day. From the beautiful stonework and historic interiors to the open grounds and surrounding countryside, there's a wonderful balance between grandeur and intimacy.

Having photographed weddings here across several seasons, I've come to appreciate how differently these spaces can feel as the light changes. It's a setting that lends itself beautifully to both quiet, natural portraits and the spontaneous moments happening around them.

Every wedding I've photographed at Newburgh Priory has been different. The setting may be familiar, but the people, atmosphere and little moments that make each celebration special are always entirely their own.

My approach is to photograph these moments as naturally as possible, allowing the day to unfold without unnecessary interruption. From the anticipation of the ceremony to the laughter shared with friends and family, it's often the unplanned moments that become the most treasured photographs.

The Moments That Matter

A Little Time Together

Newburgh Priory's grounds offer some wonderful opportunities for portraits, particularly in the softer light towards the end of the day. The gardens, mature trees and lakeside setting provide beautiful backdrops without needing anything elaborate.

I like to keep this part of the day relaxed and unhurried. A few minutes away from the celebrations is often all that's needed to create something beautiful, while giving couples a little time to themselves.

A Place to Gather

One of Newburgh Priory's greatest charms is the contrast between its different spaces. The historic rooms, with their paintings and beautiful architectural details, offer a wonderful sense of history, while the gardens and atmospheric ruins provide a memorable setting for celebrations.

I love photographing these different elements of the day, from the carefully considered details to the moments when everyone comes together. The beautifully styled marquees in the grounds are often at the heart of the celebrations, bringing a wonderful contrast to the estate's historic surroundings.

When the Evening Takes Over

As the evening unfolds, the atmosphere at Newburgh Priory takes on a completely different character. The formalities give way to dancing, laughter and the wonderful unpredictability of a room full of people celebrating together.

These are some of my favourite moments to photograph. There's very little direction involved; just being in the right place, anticipating what's about to happen and capturing the energy of the evening as naturally as possible.

Returning to Newburgh Priory

Having photographed seven weddings at Newburgh Priory since 2019, it's a place I've come to know particularly well. Every celebration brings something different, but that familiarity with the estate, its beautiful grounds and the changing light is something I genuinely value.

That familiarity allows me to work instinctively, anticipating where the best light might be, recognising opportunities as they arise and knowing when to step back and simply let the day unfold.

Newburgh Priory is just one of the remarkable settings I've had the pleasure of photographing. You can explore more of my work at historic venues and stately homes throughout the UK.
